Dr Jens Gaster, a lawyer, was born in 1955 and is a German national.
Has been with the staff of the European Commission in Brussels for twenty years; 13 years of which with DG Internal Market and Services.
Principal administrator since 1996. Secondment to the UK Department of Trade in Industry in 1997. In 2000 sabbatical in the University of Amsterdam (research grant by the Dutch Government). After more than six years of working in the copyright unit for some six years now with the industrial property unit.
Since June 2000 Commission delegate in the European Patent Organisation's Administrative Council. In charge of institutional and EPO related arrangements concerning the proposed Community patent and in particular responsible for the overall interface between the proposed Council Regulation and the European Patent Convention as to be revised. Since 2006 Commission delegate in different instances of WIPO in Geneva. Senior desk officer for IP law and policy in the relationship with EFTA, CIS (former USSR) and the Balkans.
Co-ordinator for IP related aspects of Community enlargement Member of the drafting group of the 2003 and 2006 EU accession treaties (chapter V). Member of the Department's patent litigation and patent strategy teams.
Author of numerous publications on IP and EC law. Lecturer in IP law in several universities and academies in three different EU Member States.
